Bamboozled is a racial controversial film by director Spike Lee. Like most of Spike Lee’s films, Bamboozled examines the black community. In this case, Bamboozled portrays the black community through multiple characters that represent a part of itself. Which brings to the many possible interpretations that the movie is trying express. The one uncommon and particular message that I derived from viewing this film is about a unity and breaking the ideals of genericism and stereotypes. In my opinion piece, you will understand why I believe Bamboozled does an adequate job in perceiving the dismemberment of race within an African American community, as well as the acceptance or ignorance of genericism and stereotypes within that community. Later in the movie, while on a radio talk show for his controversial “Mantan: The Minstrel’s Millennium Show.” He expresses his full view on the African American community. Stating that the people are living in the past, and will be left behind by the other races in America. Believing that if the community was to be better acknowledged, they must catch up and be part of the bigger community. Another representation of the community are the characters Manray and Womack. Both characters along with other minor characters represent the people that would do anything, as long as the money is good. Both of them agreed to becoming the characters Mantan and Sleep’n’Eat for a Blackface minstrel show, because of how handsomely rich they would become, even when they knew it would increase the support of stereotyping. The two characters later split apart, because of Womack’s belief that they should not misrepresent their race like this for money, while Manray continued to believe that getting paid should be all that matters.
