Herman Melville's "Bartleby, The Scrivener", he consistently repeats the line " I prefer not" to imply that if you are asking him or giving him a choice you know what it would be. He does not want to work or do anything productive. Bartleby is resistant to change within society. He woud prefer to be alone!
