Baseball Innovations My primary source paper is over baseball innovations from 1866-1876 written by Albert Goodwill Spalding. In this short story Spalding writes about many different innovations he witnessed in baseball. Spalding speaks about the first glove he ever saw on a hand of a baseball player. This glove was being worn by a player by the name of Charles Waite during 1875. This glove was a skin toned color like most gloves that we wear today. During the early days of baseball it was nothing to see a player catching the ball without a glove. As you can imagine and as Spalding explained this was very hard on a players hands and caused them to be bruised all the time. Could you imagine a baseball player during today’s time having to catch every ball bare handed? As hard as the balls are being thrown during today’s time and as fast as they are coming off the ends of the bats players would probably have broken bones in their hands. When the mask was first used in the game of baseball it was worn by James Tyng. Mr. Tyng walked onto the field that day carrying this funny looking thing made of wire. No player had ever seen anything like it and found it kind of odd. This mask had been invented by a gentleman named Fred Thayer who was a player at Harvard where Mr. Tyng had come from. It took a lot of convincing but, James White into wearing the mask while trying to catch. Of course the first few pitches did not go so well and some were missed by him. After more pitches White become angry because he was having trouble seeing the ball. Due to the lack of knowledge, engineering and materials the mask was not made very well. However as time moved on we all know that the game of baseball is not played without a mask and catchers seem to have no trouble seeing the ball coming at
