If you follow the American football religiously, then you would know the connection between the football-coaching tree and the style of play that teams implement. In the NBA, the coaching tree has similar connections and the devil can be seen in the details when it comes to the Golden State Warriors style of play and coaching trees of former assistant coaches now at other teams.
Earlier this season while conducting some basketball analytics on the Boston Celtics to determine what went wrong for them in the last 15 games before the All-Star break, as compared to their first 44 games of the season, I observed a striking trend in the data. Currently, the series is 2-0 in favour of the Warriors. The difference in the two games so far for the Warriors and the Pelicans is on defence. With the Warriors being number one defensive team in the playoffs so far, and despite the run and gun style of the Pelicans, the Warriors have done enough to limit the Pelicans in seven seconds or less on defence to etch out the two victories.
As Warriors’ shooting guard Klay Thompson said after the first game against the Pelicans, “[Playing against the Pelicans] team is kind of like playing ourselves. It's like, you make a bucket, you can't relax. You have to sprint back, find a shooter and they are pushing the tempo.”
The margins for the Pelicans is extremely small against a team whose offensive style is so similar to theirs, with much better players on both offence and defence. However, they can win a game or two against the Warriors if the Warriors have an off night shooting the ball. Like two years ago, to beat the Warriors you have to force them or pray that they shoot less than 47 percent from the field and/or especially less than 40 percent from the three-point line. In addition, you have to stymie their second quarter and third quarter surges when Kerr makes his legendary adjustments that usually blow a game
