Dear Mrs. Amy Chua, As an experienced (seasoned) mother of four, having recently read an excerpt from your book “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” I unconditionally disagree with your perspective on this idea. Your ideal parenting method is unacceptable as it damages self-esteem, confidence, and creativity. It truly scares me to think that the content of your article may persuade amateur parents to mimic you and your “tactics”, which would be an absolutely tragic plummet in parenting standards, sending us back to the 1900s. I understand that you believe that the best way to raise a child is through an intense regimen consisting of limited leisure and long hours of study. However, you must recognize that there is much more to childhood than this.
In fact the Chinese mothers’ way of teaching is not the best way. They broke down the connection between imagination and knowledge. Chua claims that the children have to listen their parents, because parents think that they pay the money for their children and the children need them to alive. Chua write: “ Chinese parent believe that their kids owe them everything. The reason for this is a little unclear, but it’s probably a combination of Confucian filial piety and the fact that the parents have sacrificed and done so much for their children” (54).
My first quality that a community should have is communication. Communication is defined as the exchange of ideas, messages, or information by speech, signals, or writing. Organizations are totally reliant on communication because it is the most important piece a community can have. Communication is important to the entire process for many reasons. One example that demonstrates the lack of communication is in my book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” ; in which the daughter Lulu does not communicate with her mother about not wanting to play the violin anymore, and their relationship gets worse as they continue to fight.
First they will come for the Confederate flag, then they will come for confederate monuments, then they will come after the Church 's tax exempt status, then they will come for the few Pastors who preach the Gospel. They will charge them with hate crimes if they speak God 's truth. Then they will come for you. Next they will try and ban the old hymn "Amazing Grace.
In her point of view, Chinese parents are always strict, making their child do more than needed to do their best in life. As stated, “The vast majority of the Chinese mothers said that they believe their children can be ‘the best’ students, that ‘academic achievement
Children have lots of opportunity to do compare to Taiwan. Her daughter competitively swims and plays piano. In Elementary school there is no pressure kids can grow independently and they enjoy their childhood. Since she is a housewife, she learned that, here parents involve at school and spend too much time with their kids’ outdoor activities. That makes her think nobody works.
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother Critique Amy Chua, a professor at Yale Law School, has created an article called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother that intensively describes differences in the usage of parenting methods in Chinese and Westerners culture. The author has personally raised her children in a highly strict manner so her children succeed in life and academics. Chua often refers to the term “Chinese mother” that describes her parenting style apart from Western parents. The main purpose of this article is to show the two parenting techniques and how they affect the child 's success.
The connection between a mother and her daughter is special. A bond is created from birth that is unbreakable. Because this bond is so important, it is approached in many different ways. In the excerpt from Amy Chua’s memoir Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom, she talks about her daughter growing up playing the violin. In the excerpt from Amy Tan's novel The Joy Luck Club, she talks about herself as a young woman growing up with a very strict mother figure who wanted her to play the piano.
As Abel Ferrara once said “As barbaric as we are, it’s a miracle we haven 't blown ourselves off the face of the earth” in this quote, Ferrara is discussing how we all are barbaric and how we haven 't destroyed everything because of it. This is also shown in the short story by Frank Stockton called “The lady or The Tiger”. This story is about a barbaric kings way of punishing criminals and offenders. Its starts with the the author describing the kings barbaric ways. Shows how criminals and offenders have to choose between two doors in an arena.
For example, most Asian students are raised in an environment to respect their parents and elders. Parents are often seen as the iron fist at home that forces children to study and focus all time on homework and improvement. This actually seems to be a great support system that leads to higher grades, test scores, and intelligence. Confucian ideas of filial piety are the source of this respect and fear of elders, parents, and ancestors. “Dishonor brought to the family by any one member reflects on all family members,” so students must be very careful to do everything in their power
Additionally, high-income and highly educated parents are more likely to be involved in their children’s education, which is a key factor in adolescents’ educational successes”. (Pennsylvania State University) The key takeaway here is the acknowledgment that parents with higher income and who are better educated will have much more of an
Being brought up in a good environment that has opportunities can positively impact on the success of an individual. Children with better-educated parents are likely to be successful than those with less educated ones (Davis-Kean 294). The highly educated parents will probably enhance their children’s communication development through their advanced language skills. They can also employ their social capital to stimulate their children’s development. As a result, the children will believe that they too will achieve great academic success as their parents.
No matter what you believe or what you think is the correct thing to do, it seems that both sides, the Chinese way of educating children and the Western way, have negative and positive effects. It seems that the definitive goal for all parents is to gain their children a great future, and perchance the predominant factor should not be how you do it, but why. Notwithstanding the fact that the author is not entirely objective, she argues well for her viewpoints and constantly makes the reader reflect on how to educate
The family is well educated which provides better education to the children (Guryan, Hurst & Kearney, 2008). Both parents style of parenting is very authoritative as both parents, especially Mrs. Yau displays a high degree of nurturance In the family, both parents are noted to be in high SES as they both are well respected doctors and have a respectable background in the family history. Studies showed that high SES families can afford their children services, toys and goods, family outings and social connections which could benefit to the child, whereas low SES families could have lack of access to similar resources (Bradley and Crowyn, 2002). A study by DeGarmo and colleagues (1999) also found that income, education and occupation were associated with better parenting, which positively affected school achievement with skill-building activities and behavior in school. This can explain how Alexander has good behavior in class.
In the rural areas there seem to be more of an incentive to have a son then in urban areas. For the reason that a son can help with the labor required to run a farm. Consisting of the working the land, harvesting, and livestock. (Xie, 2014) The second cultural incentive for Chinese families’ have a son is religious rituals. The high incentive for having a son is they carrying out their families’ religious obligations, these specific cultural traditions require the son to perform ancestor worship or other familial prayers.
