There were many battles in the Civil War, there was almost 10,500 battles, and 50 major battles.The Civil War happened because the South required slaves in order to survive, however the North did not like the harsh treatment of the slaves. The Battle of Antietam was one of the major battles. The battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest battles in American history to occur over a day. There was a tallied of over 22,000 men that died, wounded, or missing. The Battle of Antietam was placed in Sharpsburg, Maryland, and near the Antietam River. The South prefered to call it the Battle of Sharpsburg, but the North prefered to call the Battle of Antietam. The South wanted to attack the North because of the many victories they had. The advantage for the Union was that they had more men and more resources. The Confederate Army also had resources but not as many. The Union army had 87,000 men fighting in this battle and in the Confederate Army there was 45,000 men fighting. Giving a huge advantage to the North. The weapons used were guns, swords, and canons. The canons that were used had the head of the canon was straight. There were 2 types of cannons used, the Smooth Borne canon, and the Rifle Canon. There were 2 models for each canons, the Smooth Born canon had an 1841 model and the confederates had 45 of them and the Union zero. Another model was the 1857 Model Napolean, the Union had 108, and the Confederate army had 27. The Rifle Canon had a Parrot Rifle and the Union had 42, and the Confederates had 36. Another model was the 3-inch Ordnance Rifle, the Union had 9 and the Confederates had 40. In total the Union had a total of 159 canons. The Confederates had a total of 148 canons. The geography of this battle was at Sharpsburg, Maryland in an area where there was flat lands but it was a corn field with a river, so neither of the sides could see each other or where they are shooting. The negative aspect of the geography of this battle was that it was hard to see which gives you a higher chance of missing the opposite team. Here you could be in the wrong position if you were assigned an area to stay or move, the soldiers are in a bad position. However, soldiers on the other side of the battle were by the Antietam lake. The Confederates that were on the inside of the Antietam lake and the Union only had one way of getting past the lake and that was the bridge. When the Union crossed the bridge there were many of them and they were crossing a narrow bridge slowing them down, which gave the Confederates a chance to shoot. In this attack the Confederate Army led by General Lee was near the town of Sharpsburg and the Union Army were trying to close in on the Confederate Army and trapping them. The terrain of this battle was flat fields of corn, by the Antietam River, giving its name the Battle of
