SUMMARY: In 1863, the Battle of Chickamauga began on September 18th and ended on September 20th, This battle was a key fight in the middle of the war because it ultimately resulted in Southern control over a major railroad system. The death toll in this battle is also noteworthy because it exceeds all other battles except Gettysburg. The battle took place in northwest Georgia,was the first battle of the civil war to take place in Georgia, and was named after the Chickamauga Creek.

IN DEPTH: Beginning on September 18th, the Union Army of the Cumberland headed by General William Rosecrans,marched on to battle the Confederate Army of Tennessee, led by General Braxton Bragg stationed at Chattanooga.

He was a U.S. Officer, railroad executive, politician, and a major general of the Confederates in the Civil War. When he was only thirteen years of age, he began studying law at the University of Pennsylvania. After two years, he decided to desert law for military.
