In the book, I Survived The Battle Of Gettysburg, 1863, by Lauren Tarshis, two kids that are slaves for the south get there chance to be freed and be with the north. A boy named Thomas and his sister Birdie are slaves for the south. When they get there chance to be freed, they take the chance and make a run for it. When they reached the north, they met this boy who looked like there cousin Clem. The boy’s name was Henry, and henry took Thomas and Birdie to the north army, and told them they will be same there.
The Battle of Gettysburg was July 1 - July 3, 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Battle of Gettysburg was a game changer in the Civil War for 3 reasons: the geography, morale, and losses. The first reason Gettysburg was a turning point-or game changer- was because the Confederates lost a lot of men. The Confederates lost about 34% of their men (Document B.)
It has been a long 4 months since blood has been shed in the, already finished, Battle of Gettysburg. The battle lasted three long, hellish days, of blood, sickness, amputated limbs, death and everything else that comes along with war. For all that I know, General Lee is completely insane to have tried to invade the North; why would he do that? Already contradicting what I have previously said, insanity is not really the word; overconfidence would be it. Seeing as though he came from a series of wins, it is not a surprise that General Lee would become overconfident, but with overconfidence comes the sense that victory is guaranteed; which is not.
The Battle was fought on July 1-3, 1863 near and in the small Pennsylvanian town of Gettysburg. This Battle involved the most amount of casualties in the entire Civil War. The Union had both Generals George G. Meade and John F. Reynolds while the south only had Robert E. Lee as their commanding general. Small groups of both of the armies found each other at Gettysburg on July 1st. When news made it back to General Lee, in just a matter of hours, Lee moved a large sum of his troops to attack the Union head on.
The Civil War is considered to be the bloodiest episodes of warfare in American History. During this war, there were numerous well known battles. One of the most famous battles was called the Second Battle of Bull Run. The Second Battle of Bull Run was fought over August 28-30, 1862. Although this battle lasted only 3 days, there were approximately 22,000 casualties during this span.
This made a major impact on the battle in regards to the numbers of casualties per side. General Lee had less with a 1:3 ratio. From a strategic point of view this battle was looked at as a Union victory for the simple fact that Lee had his men retreat. During this engagement many high ranking personnel were directly impacted resulting in numerous deaths on the officer side. Two Major Generals along with four Brigadier Generals were announced killed in action during the skirmish.
This battle took away many soldiers in different ways. Some were killed, some were wounded, and some even went missing. Around 43,000 casualties overall were at the Battle of Gettysburg. 23,000 for the Union and 20,000 for the Confederates according to (Doc. B). By the end of this battle a lot of both sides armies’ were decreased in size.

The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in the history of North America. The battle lasted three days long. The general of the Confederacy was Robert E. Lee, and the general of the Union was George G. Meade. The Battle of Gettysburg started off when Robert E. Lee formulated a plan to attack the Union in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
In, 1862 one of the most important battles of the Civil War happened, the Battle of Antietam, from the pressure, to the death toll, and the effects on the armies. The battle took place in September 1862, about a year and a half after the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter. The stakes leading into the battle was enomous on both sides with a win for each army could turn the tide of the war. The Battle of Antietam was also notable because it is the single deadliest day in American History. Lastly, the effects of the brutal death toll and the evacuation of the Confederacy would have lasting effects on the US.
Lee began his campaign on June 3, 1863. It aided in the leading of the Battle of Gettysburg because in the early events of the war, the Union authorities were in the dark when it came to Lee’s intentions. When Hooker got word that Confederate troops were collecting about 25 miles northwest of Fredericksburg, he reacted. Hooker called 7,000 of his troopers and 3,000 of his best foot soldiers and gave the orders to “disperse and destroy.” This acted as the first and only offensive that Hooker launched during Lee’s invasion.
This specific battle arose when the confederate and the union were both aiming for a raid in the same area which led to a collision of the armies, immediately General Lee decided to call his forces to that location, forcing the union to call for reinforcements ultimately leading to the three-day battle resulting in many deaths and a victory to the union. Confederate General Robert E. Lee was eager to invade the north and put a negotiated end to the fighting, but the battle of Gettysburg showed him that his hopes were not achievable and his power would inevitably come to an end. The Union won the battle and crushed the Confederates' hopes of becoming an independent nation, also proving to the Union that they could conquer General Lee. Due to these reasons, this battle is known for being the turning point of the civil war, but also commonly known as the battle with the highest amount of casualties in all of the civil war era. Both the Confederate and the Union armies lost troops and dealt with injuries, but the Confederates lost their advantage when the union took the high ground and killed thousands of men while they tried to storm the hill, leading to a major impact on the strength of the Confederate

On the side of the Confederates, 3,905 dead, 18,735 wounded, and 5,425 missing. “Overall, casualties at Gettysburg totaled 28,063 for the Confederates.” (History.net) Before the Battle of Gettysburg, General Robert Lee, the general for the Confederates had to prepare. Just days before the Battle of Gettysburg, General Robert Lee and the Confederates achieved a great victory over Union Forces at Chancellorsville.
The confederacy, led by Robert E. Lee, suffered more of a loss even though they had less casualties then the union, having 10,320. Oh those casualties, 1,550 died, 7,750 injured and 1,020 missing. just from 6 to 10 am, over 8,000 confederate soldiers had died.
