The Battle of Little Bighorn Cover Up How did Custer legitimately die? Was it actually numerous Indians that outnumbered him at the Battle of Little Bighorn? Some people believe that there was a big plan involved to have Custer die that day. There are many conspiracy theories that originated from his death. A main theory includes Custer’s dislike for Captain Benteen. According to popular knowledge, it is believed that Captain Frederick W. Benteen and Major Marcus A. Reno had a big plan to be heros in the outcome of the battle and have Custer killed through the battle. Terry made a plan at the start of the Battle of Little Bighorn for the Cavalry to trap the Indians in the Little Bighorn Valley. This included Colonel Custer, Major Reno and Captain Benteen to be able to communicate and work as a team. When General Terry had drew out the plan, Major Reno then scouted the area and had tracked in an Indian trail which Custer was to follow. Rice (1998) described Custer as “a romantic figure in his buckskin jacket and yellow-striped blue trousers...galloped off to catch up with his troopers”(p. 66). Major Reno and Captain Benteen just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they were so fatigued that they would not have been able to think straight anyways. I believe that Custer did what he had done at so many other battles, he gave an all-or-nothing at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He may have realized last minute, a little too late, that there were more Indians than he thought. He almost repeated what happened at the Battle of the Washita, but decided to stay with his battalion, which ended up getting him killed. There is clear evidence that everyone was just sleep deprived and it took them a while longer to comprehend what was happening around them. People just try to bring back the conspiracy theories because there is not enough evidence to support their theory. There is enough facts floating around to see the which events actually took place at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. I believe everyone that was involved in the Battle of Little Bighorn were indeed trying their hardest to fight for what they thought was right at the time. People today are trying to bring back up the conspiracy theory just because they believe that the Battle of Little Bighorn should not have happened. They want to try and argue that the only reason there was a battle was because Major Marcus Reno and Captain
