Many battles were fought during the civil war. I was a rough time in American history. Even though there were quite a few battles in the civil war, the Battle of Shiloh was the greatest. The battle of Shiloh is one of the most known battles because up until that time in the Civil War it was the bloodiest of the battles, it was also well known for how many soldiers were lost on both sides, The battle of Shiloh was unique because of the diseases the soldiers endured, the arduous terrain, weather conditions, the soldiers relied upon.

The battle took place in Hardin County southwestern Tennessee. The Shiloh Battlefield is bordered by the Tennessee River, that is 650 miles long. The terrain consists of mostly of flat land and dirt paved roads, though some areas are very hilly. This terrain gave both the Union and Confederates about the same ground advantages. The Hornet’s Nest was an important event that happened during the Battle of Shiloh, the name given to the area of the Shiloh battlefield where the Confederate troops made attacks again and again against one of the Union’s troops to where by the middle of the day some Confederates had completely surrounded the one individual troop. Throughout the second day in battle both sides gained somewhat victory where at some times the Union would push the Confederates back and at other time the Confederates would be pushing the Union back. Union casualties were 13,047 (1,754 killed, 8,408 wounded, and 2,885 missing. Confederate casualties were 10,699 (1,728 killed, 8,012 wounded, and 959 missing. At the end of the Battle it was said that there were so many casualties that you could walk across the fields without ever touching the ground due to the loss of the fallen soldiers on both sides.
