From June 26 to July 2, 1862 the Seven Days Battle was an attack by General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army that comprised of six different battles. McClellan 's army had the intent of capturing Richmond, Virginia, but Lee lunched a counter attack and drove McClellan’s army back to the sea. This ended the Peninsula Campaign. With a Confederate Victory, this increased morale in the South, because of the string of victories Lee had had. Lee would soon be victorious at battles following seven days battle, such as Fredericksburg.
Response Essay W5 In “Battle Royale”, the first chapter of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, the chapter uses a variation of dialect in the narrator’s tone of voice throughout the reading to carry out his position of a past he was naive of. The narrator takes his reader on a flashback of a time he was invited to give his high school graduation speech at a gathering where he unknowingly would be a part of a circus act in a room full of white citizens before he may present his speech. “I wanted to deliver my speech and he came at me as though he meant to beat it out of me.” (1216)
The Venus of Willendorf Sculpture was made in 24,000- 22,000, Before the Common Era (BCE), the Paleolithic Period or Old Stone Age, which was the longest phase of human history. The Paleothic Period was made up of nomadic hunters and gathers that were sheltered in caves, used fire, and stones for tools. A fun fact about this discovery is that it is the earliest pieces of prehistoric sculpture that has ever been found. It was made by hand, made of limestone, has a height of 11cm and was found in Willendorf, Austria. When looking at this piece, you would probably see the female reproductive anatomy that has been a bit exaggerated.
President Herbert Hoover prolifically described the Battle of King’s Mountain when he stated, “History has done scant justice to its significance, which rightly should place it beside Lexington and Bunker Hill, Trenton and Yorktown, as one of the crucial engagements in our long struggle for independence.” (The American Presidency Project, 1930) It was a little battle and a little army that fought it, but it was of enormous importance. Following the two major British victories at Charleston and Camden, it appeared that American resistance was at an end as General Charles Cornwallis looked to have a clear path all the way to Virginia. By September 1780, Cornwallis was making plans to invade North Carolina.

Illusion Versus Reality Illusions tend to drift an individual away from their sanity, causing them to negligently live their lives according to false, misleading and fantasized beliefs. Reality, on the other hand, is the state of the world in which it exists. The theme of reality versus illusion, and how one copes with conflict, is excessively depicted in Margaret Laurence “Horses of the night,” through the protagonist, Chris. He experiences several external and internal conflicts associating with his grandfather and chris’ environment. In relation with external conflicts, Chris encounters internal and external conflicts between society and himself, his need to obtain a rich life to uphold his reputation in society takes over his mind, and the reality becomes a blur of colors which he does not seem to see.
The article, The Perilous Fight, by Sean Gregory, discusses the recent protests that have been occurring at sporting events. The article focuses on Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit when the national anthem was being played at the football games and how this act of protest has begun to spread throughout the entire country. This form of protest is no longer just in NFL games, but also in college football, volleyball games, high school football, and children’s leagues. Many responses were very critical calling the protesters disrespectful and unpatriotic towards the military for kneeling during the national anthem. Despite all the harsh critiques, I fully support and agree with the protestors for trying to raise awareness for the many injustices
The Modern Triumph of Napoleon If you take a scroll in Brooklyn Museum on a rainy afternoon, you will notice an intriguing piece called “Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps” by Kehinde Wiley. There may be many reasons why this painting catches your eye. It could be the enormous size of the painting, the elaborate golden frame that stands out from other frameless contemporary art, or perhaps the excess of detail and sharp realism rather than the abstractness that is common in other pieces of the gallery. A second glimpse of the piece will bring about the feeling that you’ve seen this piece somewhere else before, in fact.
On our field trip to the Getty villa this semester, we had to choose an art piece that stood out to us among the many there. The task at hand seemed easier than it was, as there were many art pieces that held my attention. One thing I kept in mind was that many of the Greek art pieces were either recovered from the bottom of the sea or were Roman duplicates. This meant finding background and details about them would be challenging. Of the art pieces, the Statue of Hercules or the “Lansdowne Herakles” was the one that I chose to write about.
While it was a common practice for ancient civilizations to place females in a subordinate position in society, Etruscans' mentality and attitude on contrary were reversed. They treated females in a very dignified manner as women had the freedom of speech, financial ability and most importantly power. Etruscans had one of the highest gender equalities in contrast to other ancient civilizations of that existing period for instance the Romans because in Roman societies, symposiums were considered strictly as an all male sector only where it involves male thoughts sharing, festive drinking etc. but Etruscans were on the exact opposite end. Etruscan females were allowed to participate in the symposiums, attend banquets, share a toast with
Similoluwa Oluwole Professor Bult ART 107 13 November, 2015 Michelangelo and his work: Creation of Adam Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, commonly known as Michelangelo, was born on March 6, 1475 at Caprese, Tuscany now known as Italy (Roger 2). Michelangelo, like Leonardo, was a man of many talents; he was a renowned Florentine sculptor, architect, painter, and poet. He is credited as the founder of the high Renaissance style and considered the most influential of late Renaissance artists (Houston 16). His works exhibit his remarkable understanding of human anatomy and muscular structure, a skill which he used to incorporate emotion and liveliness into his works. He rarely painted landscapes; his subject matters were mostly human,
Much like the Olympians from ancient mythology, Renaissance artists are regarded as gods. They revolutionized the art world, reviving themes and styles derived from the Ancient Greeks and Romans. The style they created completely contrasted with that of its predecessor, International Gothic. But how did this “Rebirth” come about? There are many answers to this question, but much of it lies in patriotism and civic values, especially in sculpture.
Michelangelo 's life like sculptures and paintings were massively influential to other renaissance artists, his artwork was copied and mocked by many artist, and eventually his art developed into an art movement called Mannerism. Mannerist painters exaggerated and elongated human body proportions. From 1520 - 1580 late renaissance, Mannerism was extremely popular until Baroque art came into fashion. Before Michelangelo’s art came into play, artist during the dark ages drew human bodies one dimensional,
