Petition
Turn Bears Ears into a National Monument
Dear President Obama,
Bears Ears is America’s most significant and critically unprotected cultural landscape. Home to Native American civilizations for millennia, the area also serves as a haven for thousands of animals and important ecological sites threated by human development.
Conservation of this expanse of public lands is central, not only to the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, but to the rest of the United States. Designation of the land as a national monument would preserve the cultural heritage of Native American tribes like the Navajo for continued practice and tourists to learn from.
The proposal to expand Bears Ears into a national monument is an objective several local native tribes have been working towards for decades. That is why I urge you to designate the area of Utah’s 1.9 million acres of public lands, commonly known as Bears Ears, as a federally protected national monument. Doing so will ensure the continuity of this unique piece of cultural history.
