“Beat! Beat! Drums!-Blow! Bugles! Blow!”(Whitman 1) exclaimed by Walt Whitman in his poem Beat! Beat! Drums!. It was what a soldier would hear before heading into a long gruesome battle as most were. Many writers like Walt Whitman used imagery, irony, and structure to protest war. An amplitude of these writers have either seen or experienced the effects of war as well as the causes. When protesting war, authors use an immense amount of imagery to describe what happened. They sometimes describe the soldiers as “knock-kneed, coughing like hags”(Owens 2) after the soldiers left a fight. The entire stanza is a piece of irony, war is not kind and when a woman's husband dies she should mourn in all rights. Some authors make you think something good will happen and everyone is gonna be okay, but “Ted Lavender, who was scared, carried tranquilizers until he was shot in the head” (O’Brien 8-9) when he was in a village. Even though he might have seemed he went to war it wasn’t on his choose and the reader might have thought that he was a medic and might have done some good until he was killed. Writers use structure as a way to bring about feelings from the reader. Structure can make a reader think why, what, or even how. When protesting war, structure requires that the reader look at all the stanzas and look at how they are set up and understand what the author wants the reader to feel. In the poem War Is Kind, the poem goes from “war is kind / [to] where a thousand corpses lie” (Crane 5-11). It is a great change in stanzas that is throughout the poem and it says do not worry, there is just death everywhere you look. It is very similar to where in the in The Things They Carried, the author starts with what they need to have like “Can openers, pocket knives, heat tabs, wristwatches” (O’Brien) and etc., then he talked about what they wanted to bring like “a toothbrush, dental floss, and several … bars of soap” (O’Brien).
