Archetypes In Beauty And The Beast

Among the 8.7 million species that roam the world, Homo sapiens, commonly known as humans, are the most superior species. Their ability to use emotions such as love, allows them to make and act upon certain situations. Love can be defined as an intense feeling of deep affection towards someone or something. In the Beauty and the Beast, the various types of love is evident throughout the plot. The classic novel, expresses different perspectives of love through the archetypes of the tale. More specifically, Hero’s affection towards her family, Grotesque and his appearance and the jealous sisters and their envious ways are all prime examples. Another reason why this is an excellent illustration of family love is due to the fact that Beauty was voluntarily willing to go to the castle. The Beast commanded the merchant to bring a daughter who was willing to come; which meant one of the three. Immediately Beauty volunteered, as she did not want her sisters to suffer for the rose that she asked her father to bring, which was ultimately the cause of the conflict. This reveals the author’s perspective on the strength of family love as this a great representation of how far a family member is willing to go to protect and help another family member. Another instance the author showcased love in the Beauty and the Beast, was through the archetype of the Grotesque displayed by the Beast. After being turned into an ugly beast by a fairy, the once handsome prince’s only way to revert back was to find true genuine love: “A wicked fairy had condemned me to remain under that shape until a beautiful virgin should consent to marry me.” (Beaumont, 179). Once thought of as a monster, Beauty came to realization that she could not live with Beast, as she created an unbreakable bond with him.
