Beauty and the Beast Summary In France was a small village where a beautiful young woman lived, her name was Belle. Despite her beauty, Belle was viewed as odd from the rest of the townspeople because she posses intellect, something most women did not have during this time period. However, Gaston, the man every other woman is after, only has eyes for Belle. Not settling for a man of low intelligence, she refuses to marry him, no matter how many times he asks her hand. Belle lives with her father, Maurice. Maurice was an artist, inventor, and widower. Off going to a convention, Belle asks him to bring back a single rose, much like the one in the painting of her and her mother as a child. One night, a hideous old hag came to his door and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold of the night. Laughing in her face he refused. Transforming before his eyes, she turned in to the most beautiful enchantress, showing him that beauty comes from within. With this, she turned the handsome prince into a hideous beast to learn his lesson. She also transformed all of his servants into enchanted objects. However, the enchantress left a way to break the curse; she left him a rose. If he could find true love before the last petal fell, the spell would be no more. If not, the castle and its beings would live out the rest of its days as objects and the beast would live alone and have no one who loves him. After eating a wonderful dinner with the enchanted objects, Belle decides to roam around and explore the castle, in the forbidden west wing of course. Discovering that is where the beast lives, Belle finds the rose in a glass dome. She begins to take the top of the dome off when the beast charges in after her and tells her to leave because of what she has
