We decided to conduct our fieldwork at the local Stonebriar Mall Barnes & Noble. By viewing the checkout area of the store, we were able to determine that there was an even distribution of female and male workers: 12 workers in total. We then took account of the average gender and age in specific areas of the store. We first took note that the children’s section was located by the downstairs entrance, intended to persuade families to enter the store. The children’s section contained an abundance of educational books along with general fiction books for younger readers. It also had an area designated for the comfort of young readers, with children sized furniture and a mural depicting illustrations from well-known picture books. The entirety of the older couples were gathered around maps of popular European destinations. We could infer they were planning a vacation, one they could now afford, for they now lacked dependent children whom they need to care and spend for. In the literary classics section that includes the works of famous philosophers like Homer and Sophocles, a single woman trekked down the short aisles, filled with fewer books than the surrounding sections. This indicated that classics are perhaps deteriorating in popularity. Maybe people are now focusing more on modern popular novels, located near another entrance to the store, and less on the works of the past. We found the section dedicated to young adult books completely deserted. This contributes to the popular belief that young adults are no longer interested in the paper works of others and rather in the e-books or apps such as Wattpad. As we walked out of the store, we were instantly swamped by a plethora of teenagers distracted by the allure of stores.
