As scientists were expanding theories and laws, musicians were creating new writing techniques, resulting in new genres of music. Baroque composers began pursuing an interest in drama, and they had to use contrast to achieve this idea. The difference between loud and soft, solo and ensemble, and voices and instruments played an important role when composing a piece. Composers began writing music for specific instruments. The timbre of various instruments, such as the violin or trumpet, determined what instrument played what section of a piece because each instrument can produce a different sound. The article titled “What is Baroque Music?” states that the Baroque Era is when the concepts of melody and harmony truly began to articulate. Composers focused less on polyphony and turned their attention to a single voice with a simple accompaniment. There was an emphasis on a single melody with a bass line, thus inventing the practice of basso continuo. Beethoven has been familiar with Bach’s art of composition since his youth. He, like Mozart, studied The Well-Tempered Clavier; however, Beethoven was lucky enough to study under the supervision of a great composer, Joseph Haydn. Beethoven frequently quoted Bach in his sketchbooks and often played his preludes and fugues (Rasmussen). He copied out long passages and special transitions to learn how to master the art of composing. Beethoven’s discoveries helped him develop as a composer and led him to a fundamental breakthrough in his compositions.
