Hip hop is a type of music that started in the 1970s. It began in Jamaican-American, African-American, and Latino-American urban areas in some of the larger cities of the United States. Hip hop uses a style of singing called rapping. The singer or group chants or says words with a rhythm that rhymes. The lyrics of hip hop songs are often about the life of urban people in the big cities. Some hip hop song lyrics are about gangs, violence, and illegal drugs. Hip hop music also uses musical styles from pop music such as disco and reggae. Rap and hip hop music have become successful music genres. People often say that hip hop degrades women and society and in most households create problems with parents and what their children are listening to. Today hip hop has a huge affect on the young adults and very few adults. Hip hop has impacted the culture with it being movies made about it like Krush Groove Beat Street, hustle and flow, and get rich or die trying. Rappers are also turning actors which are positive it shows the people that admires them that they can be more than just another rapper, but that they can actually play other roles than just emcees. Hip hop is not always about killing people or of them telling their listeners they will kill people or even degrading women by calling them other names besides theirs. This type of rap is what people refer to as ‘’turn-up music’’.
