Before I Fall, written by Lauren Oliver is a fantasy novel about a teenage girl named Samantha Kingston. She has the ideal life, she’s dating the hottest guy in school, she has three perfect best friends, and she’s one of the most popular girls in school. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her amazing life. Instead, it turns out to be her last. But then she then gets a second chance. Sam has to relive her last day seven times in order to figure out why she had to die and each time she realizes something new about herself, her friends and her family. The two main themes in Before I Fall connect Sam’s worries and questions about her actions and regrets throughout the story to the plot, and also help to hook the reader. One theme of Before I fall is that everyone should live their lives to the fullest without having any regrets, because no one ever knows if or when it’s going to be cut short. “The last laugh, the last cup of coffee, the last sunset, the last time you jump through a sprinkler, or eat an ice-cream cone, or stick your tongue out to catch a snowflake. You just don 't know.” (Lauren Oliver, Before I Fall) This theme should be widely known because regrets shouldn’t hold people back from living their lives. Regrets should be thought of as opportunities. When they’re are taken as opportunities to grow it changes the outlook on life and it makes it a lot easier to live life to its fullest. The other theme to this story is that actions have consequences that are usually unseen or unexpected and all people deserve to be treated equally. One little thing can change everything for someone else in a huge way. The book is about choice and consequence, and how much of an impact small actions may have on someone else. Sam really realizes this lesson in the end of the book when Sam saves Juliet, the girl who Sam and her friends have been tormenting for years, by jumping in front of a car and pushing Juliet out of the way and as a result Sam saves Juliet from committing suicide. This event shows that Sam knows she died
