Are you truly living without happiness? One could live a plentiful life alone, and who are we to say that the happiness that comes along with belonging to a community is essential to life? Consequently, if a problem were to arise, one would have to be prepared to face it alone. According to the film Stranger Than Fiction directed by Marc Forster you can live a life of contentment by yourself, but to overcome the obstacles that life presents, you need a community to support you. Harold Crick is perfectly satisfied with his life of numbers and being alone. But once a life or death situation emerges, Harold needs help from others, he needs to create a community for himself. He finds a friend in his coworker Dave, a romantic partner in his auditee Ana Pascal, and an expert on his current problem in Professor Jules Hilbert. Jules is using his extensive knowledge as a literary professor to help Harold. Without Jules, Harold most likely wouldn 't have found to author, therefore wouldn 't have survived. Especially in Harold’s specific situation, without help from a professional, he wouldn’t have even known where to start. Jules is the third person part of this community that care for Harold and, for the most part, want to see Harold live a happy life.

Without people who care about him, Harold would have had no chance in living. Whether you have an author in your head trying to kill you, a terminal illness, or any obstacle that life throws your way, without support from a community these difficulties can be impossible to overcome. Even if Harold wasn’t in this life or death scenario, this community he was able to build makes him happy, gives him something to live for. He needed these people to survive, but did he need the
