Belzec concentration camp The Belzec concentration camp was built mainly to kill the Jews. Belzec started as a labor camp in April 1940. It was built for the extermination of the Jews. It was the first Nazi camp with stationary gas chambers. Belzec had two sections of the camp. In 1942 mass graves were opened. In the early 1940's Belzec started as a labor camp. Some Jewish historians think that the people were gassed with a diesel engine and buried. The gas chambers were in the second section of the camp. There was a barbed wire around the camp to hide the gas chambers and other things that were occurring. Most of the people at the camp were gassed then buried in the burial pits. It was divided into two sections. Camp 1 was the northern and western sections. The second camp had the gas chambers and the rectangular burial pits. The men and the women were separated from each other. Most likely if you were weak or they thought you were worthless you would go straight to the second camp. The camp opened mass graves in 1942. In the spring of 1942, graves were opened and the dead bodies were cremated. They did this to destroy the evidence of the extermination. After that, the camp was officially closed. This place was then turned into a farm and was given away. In this camp the majority of people murdered were Jews. If they Jews were unable to work they were sent right away to the gas chambers.
