Ben Carson uses a lot of ethos in his speech. He uses ethos mostly when talking about religions. He also uses ethos when mentioning or honoring someone in his speech. He uses ethos when also talking about politics. “With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous escape.” is a quote that shows the ethos in this speech. This is ethos because when he is using the term “Godless” he is speaking about their religion and about how they do not believe in God. The rest of this sentence talks about the reputation of people who do believe in god, which is ethos. He is saying that people who do not believe in God have a bad reputation and people tend to think that they are bad to be around and are evil. Ben Carson uses ethos successfully in this quote by showing how society views them and referring to them as “the godless”. Ben Carson is a very religious man. “And I’ve talked to very prominent Democrats, very prominent Republicans.” He uses ethos in this quote when talking about politics. Ben Carson used this speech as a forum for the political, social, and business elite to assemble and pray together. This speech was critical of President Obama’s policies and particularly Obamacare when the President and First Lady Michelle Obama were seated a few feet away. The use of figurative language and ethos in this speech is what makes this speech successful due to the sources of these devices and the relation of these
