Dog training takes place for many reasons. Some dogs are hunting dogs, some are trained for protection, while others learn nifty tricks. Dogs are eager to please their master. This can make this them an great pet to have. Here are some tips that can make training your dog a snap.

Keeping your dog mentally engaged will ensure your pet stays healthy and happy. Chew toys with a treat inside and walks in new areas will excite your dog by providing novelty and challenge. If you don't keep your dog entertained, they will make their own fun by wreaking havoc on your belongings.

Dogs are eager to please and respond well to positive reinforcement tactics. You most likely do not have treats available at any given time, especially when training is not in progress. Verbal praise and physical affection, such as hugs and petting, can be just as effective as treats to reinforce any desired behavior when training your dog.

When training your puppy not to chew, try to help him along by setting up a "chew-friendly" environment. Excessive chewing is not only damaging to your precious objects, but dangerous to your dog. Things like brushes, small toys and nylons are common things around the house that pose a choking hazard.

Always maintain a positive, upbeat tone when training your dog. Rewarding your dog with praise is an important part of reinforcing desired behaviors. Never use punishments or negative words when training your dog. These methods will result in fear and anxiety which will make training more difficult.

Dog training is a great investment. A dog that is not well trained and misbehaves can cause havoc in your home. It can destroy your items, stress family members out, and even alienate itself to the point where nobody wants to have it around.
