All Abroad: Why Studying Abroad is Still Vital
In America, people can easily find many South Korean students who are studying abroad. The high number of South Koreans studying abroad in America shows, in a roundabout way, how studying abroad has become effective for them such as “the unique experience of living in a foreign country" (Ryu, Kim, and Lee 752). I also decided studying abroad since I visited my uncle who lives in America because I realized that if I study abroad in America, I can acquire many advantages. At that time, I could meet many Korean students who were arguing how studying abroad has excellent benefits that could not be gained unless they walk out of comfort zone. Moreover, studying abroad contributes “a greater ethnic sensitivity and awareness in multicultural practice for students” (Boateng and Thomson 708). In South Korea, however, there is not a chance to experience cultural diversity since the percentage of foreigners living in South Korea is much lower than America’s, which it is frequently called a “melting pot of various cultures, beliefs, religions and nationalities” (Smith 390). An absence of multicultural experience created the serious problem. If young students live in only their own culture, they will be repulsed by cultures different from what they have experienced in their country. This can be demonstrated by my own personal emotions and experiences which I had in Korea before I came to study abroad in America. Until two years ago, I was a person who did not have any experience with other people from different cultures and nationalities because I did not have a chance to meet new cultures in South Korea where there are not many foreigners.
