Fear controls your thoughts, decisions and ultimately, your life. Fear is a tool used to mold you and your surroundings. In novels, the author uses fear to make people play a certain role within the society. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, he uses the fear of the beast to make the characters go crazy and for example, murder others. On the other hand, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village, used fear as a form of control to make those within the society conform to the rules and stay within boundaries. Fear is used in real life as well. For example, Benito Mussolini used fear to rise to power in Italy. Fear can be used to set boundaries, lead one to insanity, and help one rise to power. In the Lord of the Flies, a group of British schoolboys had their plane shot down, and end up alone on a deserted island. Once they arrived, there was an immediate fear that began to evoke among the boys. This fear is the beast. Benito Mussolini used this tool to his advantage over the people of Italy. When political chaos broke out in Italy during World War 2, the people had fear in what would happen to their country. That’s when Mussolini claimed that he would be the one to restore order. “Fascism, the more it considers and observes the future and the development of humanity, quite apart from political considerations of the moment, believes neither in the possibility nor the utility of perpetual peace,” was a famous quote Mussolini would use.
