During Act 1, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Benvolio is talking to Romeo, and Romeo reveals to Benvolio as side that he has never seen before in which is showing Romeo’s devotion towards Rosaline. During this passage, Rosaline shows no interest in Romeo causing Romeo to be devastated because, “Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers’ eyes; Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears” (1.1.198-199). When the author uses the words “purge” and “vexed” it leads the audience to believe that Romeo has this love towards Rosaline, and has never felt this feeling so in depth only to be crushed by Rosaline’s rejection towards Romeo.
