Beowulf and Achilles are similar but different in quite a few different ways. In the story of Beowulf, Beowulf is selfless, he cares about his friends and family more than himself. While fighting against fate Beowulf refuses to accept defeat. Achilles only cares about himself and the image he puts out there about himself. Both are similar by the passion they have for battle and numerous other events. Therefore, the differences and similarities have an impact on how people view each hero.
However, many heroes have similar traits, in this case Achilles and Beowulf. Bravery is something that is displayed in both heroes. After Grendel was dead, Beowulf decided to go a step further and murder Grendel’s mother, “She fell, Grendel’s fierce mother…” …show more content…

When involving his life, Achilles is extremely selfish. In the Iliad he rejects to go to war since he disagreed with his leader, he decided to withdraw himself from combat. In result, he lost his best friend, that is when he decided to go to war. He went to war when tragedy hit his life. Beowulf on the other hand is selfless. He went to Herat out of good faith. When he entered the battle he had no idea what he was up against, also he didn’t know if he was going to win. Knowing he had the faith and the dependence of the people Beowulf went into battel with Grendel. He risked his life to help others, even though the issue had nothing to do with him.
Honestly, Beowulf fits the basic profile of a hero in today’s civilization. He shows his courage and bravery. Beowulf shows that he has compassion for others no matter who they are or where they came from. He is selfless when it comes to risking his own life for people he may not know, such as any hero should. Beowulf represents the population of Herat as a whole. He wears his heart on his sleeve to prove to people that he is a hero. He puts his all into everything he does, in result, he is rewarded for his services with the label of a remarkable
