Beowulf is considered to be an epic hero. Throughout the story, Beowulf’s character has shown signs and characteristics of an epic hero. He fights many battles and stores peace again to his people and symbolizes hope. Have you ever questioned, what would happen if Beowulf was gone? Who would be brave enough to save and lead his people as he did? In the journal article, Beowulf and the teaching of leadership by Dr. Tom Loughman and Dr. John Finley, both authors examine Beowulf’s character as a leader towards his nation, if he falls into the conger and kanungo’s charismatic leader model and if so, does the story show risk of an overreliance. As I have read this article, I liked the way they organized their ideas and gave explanations connecting them to the real world. They explain how Beowulf fits into being a charismatic leader, but they need more supporting details from the epic. According to Dr. Loughman and Dr. Finley, a charismatic leader are “seen to be engaging in exemplary acts that subordinates interest as involving great personal risk and sacrifice” (159). After Beowulf dies, there is no one who could claim the throne. Without a leader, the people will be lost because many people rely upon charismatic leaders (Loughman and Finley 160). Both authors show an understanding of Beowulf being a charismatic leader. Furthermore, they explain the qualities of a charismatic leader but show lack of information to explain a little more about it. Overall, the story teaches us a lesson to be brave and help others.
