Beowulf shares the same traits with as many other heroes I know about. For example, Beowulf 's willpower can be compared with Henry Cavill 's Superman (Man of Steel). In Beowulf: "The Battle with the Dragon", Beowulf battled the dragon and he noticed that his weapons started to fail him and that he was weakened by his age. In spite of that, Beowulf 's willpower enabled him to continue fighting the dreadful beast. Eventually, after his ally Wiglaf provided Beowulf with some assistance, he was able to break through and deliver the killing blow to the dragon.
One being that Beowulf is an actual Old English epic poem written about a heroic warrior, not certain to be fact or fiction. Also he sought after fame and recognition. He was always being praised and rewarded for all of the brave battles he had faced. While Malcolm X on the other hand, was an actual living person and civil rights activist whom was not always praised for his doing, but often ridiculed. Unlike Beowulf, Malcolm propelled to be an activist through years of tribulations.
Mythological or Archetypal philosophy has been around for centuries and is used across numerous cultures. Carl Jung, a close colleague of Sigmund Freud, defined the word archetype as “a figure...that repeats itself in the course of history wherever creative fantasy is fully manifested.” Archetypes can come in various forms: characters, images, and situations. Though many different forms of archetypes appear in the tale of Beowulf, specifically, the archetypal character roles of the hero and the outcast are major aspects of the story. The role of the hero is a popularly recognizable element of many stories.
The modern day heroes have qualities very similar to the classical heroes
Thesis: Because of Beowulf’s excellent characteristics and values not only is he considered a hero in his story, but he is also considered the basic model for modern day superheroes like Captain America. I. Captain America has similar physical characteristics to that of Beowulf because the character of Captain America was based off the story of Beowulf. a. Captain America i. A blonde, blue-eyed, muscular man with a sculpted physique. ii.
Literary experts believe the Beowulf manuscript was written somewhere in the late tenth century, implying it was passed around during early medieval England (British Library n.d.). In the text, Beowulf’s physique, nature, and personality demonstrate that Anglo-Saxons during this period appreciated the qualities of bravery, unequivocal speech, and self-reliance. To exemplify, Beowulf on page 7 states, “My hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster” (Unknown 7). By which Beowulf makes known his autonomous character and strong nature. Following this quote are more descriptors of his brute and hard-set qualities which are then praised by the Danes and his fellow Geats, furthering the belief that Anglo-Saxons admired
All of Beowulf's actions were driven by sexual urges. Every child is born with a libido, which is a strong sexual desire provoked by a certain situations. Beowulf was looked at as a physically attractive man, and some could easily say he was a sexual figure. Knowing this, Beowulf unconsciously took this to his advantage. Although the story and movie is fictional, Beowulf is an ideal example for all of Sigmund Freud’s theories and hypotheses.
Beowulf and Superman are considered epic heroes because of the feats and battles both have conquered, along with the villains and countless evil creatures that have been defeated. Despite being closely similar in the journey each takes and the enemies they vanquish; each is vastly different in certain points of their existence and attitudes. Beowulf and Superman’s differences and similarities start at the beginning of each one’s lives and end at the last moments of their journeys. Superman and Beowulf have both struggled to conquer all foes and enemies and have fought hard for the lives each has lived, or is living, and both have acquired the titles of being an epic hero. There are scenes in both Superman and Beowulf’s quests where they show different attitudes and personalities.
Beowulf the mightiest hero, he kills demons, fights dragons, and does everything he can for the people, but how does he stack up against today's heroes like Spider Man. Beowulf can kill monsters, demons, and demons mothers, but what about if the circumstances were swapped. What if Beowulf had to fight some of the villains that a hero like Spider Man fights? Would he still be able to boast about taking them on bare handed? Comparing Beowulf to some of the villains of the comics may not make him seem as strong or have as much battle prowess.
Throughout the years, Beowulf has been compared to many modern day super heroes. However, the super hero that Beowulf is most easily compared to is Superman. Although there are multiple differences amongst these two characters, there are a few similarities as well. Such similarities exist in appearances, as well as supernatural qualities. Moreover, Beowulf and Superman are both portrayed as heroes for their time.
Even if we take into the time period in which it was written, Beowulf is not the shining hero he
Compare and Contrast: Heroism When people hear the word “hero,” Thor, X-Men, Captain America, Superman and several others may come to mind. Heroes do not have to own supernatural powers to be mighty but need to make an impact. Heroism is manifested in the actions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Beowulf by staying true to their beliefs. Nothing was able to stop their way of life.
Beowulf and King Arthur are both portrayed as heroes and someone to look up to. Some similarities are both of them are very brave. They are also both very compelling leaders in their own respective ways. Even with their similarities they have differences in their heroic qualities such as Beowulf not really being a human in the sense that he can do superhuman things and King Arthur being a normal human being. It's also interesting to note that King Arthur was more of a hero for his character whereas Beowulf was more of a hero in the sense that he slays monsters and dragons.
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
