How does Beowulf’s faith and confidence change as these battles unfold and what might these changes signify? In each battle with Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon, Beowulf had shown different strength, motivation and goals. In lines 682-685, “No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster. No one could try.” Beowulf is showing his strength and bravery that he can try to defeat the dragon. His motivation and goal in this battle is take the treasure back to his people.
