There are many characters in the book Brave New World. One character that significantly stands out from the rest is Bernard Marx. Just like the rest of the citizens in Huxley's book, the process of decanting created Bernard as well. Due to this, he should not be different than anyone else, but somehow his psyche is different from practically all of the other characters/civilians in the novel. Because of the fact that Bernard thinks differently from everyone else, he begins to question the society that he lives in and also starts to say horrific things about himself. In Huxley's society, Bernard belongs to the highest caste. Since Bernard is an Alpha, this signifies that he in fact is intelligent as well. Due to his intelligence, it makes it easier for him to think differently than all other members of Huxley's society. The main idea that Bernard has different thoughts about is lust. Bernard desires not only lust, but he desires something more unlike the rest of the society. Due to them being programmed, they do not have the desire to have any types of strong emotions for one another. This emotion is obviously love. Bernard shows that he wants this feeling in chapter 6 on page 94, ¨“I want to know what passion is,¨ she heard him saying. ¨I want to feel something strongly.¨¨ This is one of the …show more content…

In the quote located on page 91, Bernard says ¨Even Epsilons are useful! So am I, and I damned well wish I weren't.¨ This is a sign that he wishes that he were not a needed member of society in order to truly be free and live the life that he wants. This in fact scares Lenina (a normal member of society), because she has never heard of anyone wanting to be free from society because everyone is ¨Happy¨.
