have a great relationship with Boy Willie. Once Lymon notices the piano and tells Boy Willie, this is where the drama begins. Boy Willie tells Lymon that he wants to sell the piano because he thinks it is worth a lot of money. Doaker already knows that Berniece will not let him sell the piano because of the significance it has within the family. Another reason Berniece does not want to sell the piano is because her daughter, Maretha, is learning how to play it.
“Papa Boy Charles brought that piano into the house. Now I’m supposed to uild on what they left me”(Wilson 51).If Boy Willie purchases the land he will be able to do more and help his family because he will prosper if he sell it instead of having it sit in Berniece’s house. Boy Willie wants to avoid an argument with Berniece so he decides to take the piano while she is at work. “Come on,let’s get it loaded before Berniece come
Bernard sits everyone down and begins reading his theory and all his evidence. People begin to poke holes in his argument and Bernard and Valentine begin to argue. Bernard then asks if Hannah will leave for London with him, and have sex, but is denied. Hannah and Valentine discuss how research shows the hermit she is writing about was obsessed with math. Back to the past we hear from Jellaby that the Chater’s and Brice and Byron all left because Lady Croom was jealous when she found Mrs. Chater with Lord Byron.
Towards the beginning of the play they tell us that Crawley was shot while stealing wood accompanied by Boy Willie. Berniece blames him she says, " You killed Crawley just as sure as if you pulled the trigger"(page 52).What makes her angry is that Boy willie was there and he could've possibly prevented her husbands death. They both don’t have a good relationship with each other especially when he tries to sell their piano. The loss of Crawley is ceasing her from enjoying life and its making it hard to move on.
He got himself into a quite a situation, and it isn’t until the very end that it was resolved. Sutter’s ghost begins to start attacking Boy Willie after he tries to take the piano out of the house. The ghost doesn’t subside until Berniece plays the piano and calls the spirits of their family to rid of Sutter’s ghost. After all, this symbolizes the true value of the piano and their ancestry. Surprisingly, this novel ends with Boy Willie and Lymon going back to Mississippi without selling the piano.
Berniece blames her brother for the death of her husband. Which is one part of their on again off again relationship. Since Boy Willie is back from serving his time, he is ready to make some changes in the way his life. The first thing that he wants to sell the piano that their family has. Since he is back and has become aware of the passing of his ancestors slave master’s kin, he thinks it's a perfect time to sell the piano.
Bernard is also ostracized from his community for not being content with the life and conditions presented to him. He does not comprehend the crave for soma or the need of apathetic relationships. Bernard shows his love towards a female character, Lenina but she is unable to feel or understand the emotions he is showing her. “"And to tell the truth," said Lenina, "I 'm beginning to get just a tiny bit bored with nothing
but when Boy Willy mentions selling it she defends the piano. It’s like she is “freezing” the past and not allowing it to come into her life. She refuses to accept her past and live with it. By the end of The Piano Lesson the piano is brought back into her life. A lesson that comes through the test is to allow the past to be present in her or more specifically, in Berniece’s life.
Berniece embraces her family piano because it holds a lot of value , “set that piano back other there. I done told you a hundred times i ain’t selling that piano” (Wilson 50), her ancestors died over that piano and she protects it with her life because it is a part of her culture. Boy Willie wants to sell the piano and Berniece does not want to because she knows how much value it has to he culture. She also has a lot of respect for herself and her family, and her values and morals, “ i do not allow that in my house, you gonna have to take your company some place else” (Willson 74), this quote happened when Boy Willie brought somebody home, and Berniece was not happy with Boy Willie’s actions , which shows the amount of respect she has towards her culture, it also shows that she stands by her morals and values. Berniece is not running away from her culture, but she is running away from her fears, and her family
It seems that Claudius was not happy with just taking his brothers throne, he also took his brother’s wife. Hamlet feels that the new king is full of greed and has taken over their lives. On top of his obsession with revenge Hamlet also appears to have sexual desire for his mother. The loss of his father along with his mother’s marriage to Claudius and his confusion to his feelings for his mother have set hamlet on a dangerous.
Hamlet’s views on women is adulterous which pertains to the misogynistic tendencies in the play; thus, Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, sparks up his misogynistic approaches. Hamlet is repulsed with Gertrude since she was quick to re-wed immediately following Old Hamlet’s death and cries: “She married. O, most wicked speed, to post / With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!” (1.2.156-157). Hamlet is shocked that his mother remarries to Claudius, Old Hamlet’s brother, before letting the tears on her cheek to dry.
Shakespeare’s Hamlet has a common theme that seems to make frequent appearances throughout the first two acts. This common theme centers around the idea of “seeming and being”, that is, whether a character’s feelings are true, or if they are only putting on an act to achieve a personal goal or to fulfill someone’s request. As mentioned before, this theme makes frequent appearances in the first two acts, portrayed by both major and minor characters. One of the more noted examples revolves around Queen Gertrude herself, and her feelings over the death of the former King. While she may feel pain over her husband’s death, she quickly marries his brother soon after, leaving the question if she truly loved her husband in the first place.
Her dilemma of having to choose one man over the other is driving her to insanity because she can’t pick just one of them. Certainly she loves both of them or at least that’s what she thought, but Hamlet’s father is her true love while Claudius is the brother of her husband that just so happened to become king after his brother died. In short, she doesn’t know her true feelings for either person. Gertrude feels confused and overwhelmed by everything that just unfolded in front of her. It causes her an undesirable grief that she shouldn’t have had to deal
Throughout the conversation and various parts of the play, Hamlet expresses his disgust for his mother 's actions. He insults her by comparing his father to Hyperion and Claudius to a satyr. He tells Gertrude not to sin by sleeping with him and tells her she is nothing but lustful for marrying a man like Claudius when he says, “That blurs the grace and blush of modesty,/ Calls virtue hypocrite, takes off the rose/ From the fair forehead of an innocent love/ And sets a blister there, makes marriage vows/
In act one Gertrude marries her dead husband 's brother Claudius, Hamlet is not very happy that his mother did this. Hamlet feels very betrayed by his own mother because she remarried so quickly. He feels as if this is an unforgivable
