If you hold grudges against your family or do not have a good relationship with your family, you will have no one to fall back on and you will be by yourself.

Throughout one’s life, one tends to adapt to the traditions of their family, and gain a significant bond with their loved ones, including their siblings. However, that connection a person gains can either be diminished or forgotten due to a sense of different mindsets between family members. The two stories “The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolff and “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin indicate that sibling rivalry occurs when each member does not understand or acknowledge their sibling’s perspective, and this builds a wall barrier between the siblings.
In August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson Berniece Charles has been dealing with the death of her husband, Crawley, for the past three years and the presence of an old piano in her home that ties all the way back to her great grandparents and the slavery that they were subjected to. Crawley’s death occurred due to his involvement in a firefight with police when he was assisting Berniece’s brother, Boy Willie, and Boy Willie’s friend, Lymon Jackson in the pilfering of wood. Berniece blames her brother for Crawley’s death because he was present during this action of stealing. Berniece also deals with the acceptance of an old, engraved piano in her household that has a long history of her family tied to it. In August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, Berniece

Because of this, he may feel entitled to take care of his little brother, Donald. Although Pete was there when Donald was in need at a younger age, It is also true that Pete was there for Donald in his adult life, making it hard for Donald to live life on his own.
The history of what the piano and her family makes it hard for her to have any contact with the piano. To be prideful is human nature, even when it hasn 't been earned. Being proud of who you are and what you have accomplished is an important part of everyone 's life, but sometimes we are prideful without something to be proud of. This kind of pride is shown in the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry through the character Walter Younger. He enters the play with a false sense of pride in being a man, despite the fact that he is a chauffeur who is struggling to support his family. Throughout the plot, he struggles with acceptance of his social status and economical situations, but ends up achieving true fulfillment in simply being proud of who he and his family are as people with aspirations.
The family unit is typically seen as a group of people who are strong, and who stick by one another; however, when horrendous things happen to people inside of the family, what impact can that have on them? The well-known horror author, Stephen King, answers this question in many of his books. King is known for having the ability to inflict fear on his readers; making them afraid of things which lurk in the dark or under the bed. However, in his books Pet Sematary and IT, he doesn’t just attempt to scare his readers with a menacing ghost, but rather he hits closer to home by attack the beloved family unit by showing his readers the things that happen when a family is presented with unimaginable horrors. King tears the family to pieces when they cannot bear to deal with their problems, and forces either the adults or the children to deal with the supernatural beings that are the cause of the horror with the hopes of bringing the family back together.
A. & Louw, A. E. (2014) also mentions that sibling disputes and their settlement may be viewed as opportunities in socialisation: they learn how to fight, to disagree and compromise within a safe environment. This is seen in the movie when the children come together at the top of the lighthouse to find ways to work together and break up their parents and to go back to their previous lives. The children were together in their safe environment and even agreeing to work together for their own happiness. Eventually the children became attached to each other due to working together. At the end, after they caused a big fight between their parents and they wanted to slit up, the children worked together to keep them together.

“No one would have taken them for brothers.” Truth be told, this is the main thought that can be drawn throughout the short story “The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolff. From the very beginning of the story this is said to the reader, it’s clear that these two brother Pete and Donald are polar opposites of one another. The reader will discover from this that Pete and Donald no matter what time it was in their life, they had had problems with one each other. This would infer that Pete and Donald were in a dysfunctional relationship due to Pete’s success, Donald’s lack of success, their “abuse” incident, and their handling of Webster.
When you think of family you might think of adults and their children, or kids who lost their parents but are still related to each other. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton tells otherwise. It shows that even if you are not related, you can still be family; you can still have love and affection for each other. In the book, there is a contradiction between the gang’s biological family and their “family”.
