In “The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolff, Pete and Donald were two brothers that lived life on different ends of a spectrum. Pete became more successful than his younger brother, Donald while Donald was the brother who didn't quite have his life together and was just living it day by day. At a young age, when the two brothers’ parents, however, passed away, Pete felt that because was the eldest, he had to take the role of being the ‘parent’ and taking care of him and his brother even after they grew up. Because of this, he may feel entitled to take care of his little brother, Donald. To be prideful is human nature, even when it hasn 't been earned. Being proud of who you are and what you have accomplished is an important part of everyone 's life, but sometimes we are prideful without something to be proud of. This kind of pride is shown in the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry through the character Walter Younger. He enters the play with a false sense of pride in being a man, despite the fact that he is a chauffeur who is struggling to support his family. Throughout the plot, he struggles with acceptance of his social status and economical situations, but ends up achieving true fulfillment in simply being proud of who he and his family are as people with aspirations.

This is seen in the movie when the children come together at the top of the lighthouse to find ways to work together and break up their parents and to go back to their previous lives. The children were together in their safe environment and even agreeing to work together for their own happiness. Eventually the children became attached to each other due to working together. At the end, after they caused a big fight between their parents and they wanted to slit up, the children worked together to keep them together.

From the very beginning of the story this is said to the reader, it’s clear that these two brother Pete and Donald are polar opposites of one another. The reader will discover from this that Pete and Donald no matter what time it was in their life, they had had problems with one each other. This would infer that Pete and Donald were in a dysfunctional relationship due to Pete’s success, Donald’s lack of success, their “abuse” incident, and their handling of Webster.
When you think of family you might think of adults and their children, or kids who lost their parents but are still related to each other. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton tells otherwise. It shows that even if you are not related, you can still be family; you can still have love and affection for each other. In the book, there is a contradiction between the gang’s biological family and their “family”.
