Berry Gordy Jr. was born to Berry and Bertha Gordy in Detroit Michigan on November 28, 1929. During his life he had done many things because his family was so involved in business. His father owned a carpentry service, a printing business, and a general store. Some of the things he had done were featherweight boxing, then to the army, opened a record store, went back into the factory working, and then became the owner of Motown Records. Although he always put his full effort into everything he did, Motown Records was the best yet.

Go-go music is a specific type of music that was first started in Washington D.C. go-go music was developed around the mid-1960s to the late 1970s. However, if you are from the DMV area we all know the God father of go-go music was Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers. Go-go music is unique because it has a variety of different sounds. Old school hip-hop, funk, and blues are all factors that play into creating go-go music. A live music scene called Chocolate city in the early 1970s had competitive music.
William Grant Still was an African American composer born in Woodsville, Mississippi on May 11, 1895. He grew up playing violin, starting at the age of 14, in Little Rock Arkansas. He attended Wilberforce University in 1911 determined to be a composer of concert music and opera. Early in his musical career, his primary role model in the classical world was Coleridge- Taylor, a british composer of mixed race. Around 1916, Still started to work for W.C. Handy in the arranging business.
James Brown is another person in my era who was very popular and well known for his influence on music as well the introducing of a drug into the lime light PCP. Brown was born extreme poverty but worked his way to be one of the greatest of the funk and R&B music making people give him the nick name "The Godfather of Soul." Motown was a transformative sound that arrived just at the height of the civil rights movement. Such success coming from a black business and black artists forced the rest of America to reexamine their racial prejudices that they still clung to. It seemed that it’s founder, Berry Gordy, knew from the start that Motown was something special when he hung a sign that read “Hitsville USA” above the recording studio’s headquarters. The success was almost instant for most Motown artists with song after song becoming number one hits on major music charts. However, the success was not easy, as it took strenuous amounts of work to mold the artist’s looks and sounds into something that would popularize them among the white population.

Duke Ellington was a jazz author, conductor, and entertainer amid the Harlem Renaissance. During the developmental Cotton Club years, he explored different avenues regarding and built up the style that would rapidly bring him overall achievement. Ellington would be among the first to concentrate on melodic shape and sythesis in jazz. Ellington composed more than 2000 pieces in his lifetime. The Duke Ellington Orchestra was the "house" symphony for various years at the Cotton Club.

It was clear that from the very beginning of Jackson’s career that he was one of his favorite artists. Brown engaged in the Rock ‘n’ Roll style of music, and Jackson idolized him as his godfather even though he did not fully get to match Brown’s level of the style. Jackson was more popular in pop music but in later years, it was not hard to see elements of Brown style in some of Jackson’s rock music such as You Rock My World and Give in to Me where the vocal techniques and performances could indeed be traced to those of Brown. Brown was also credited with providing a new direction for R & B that would later evolve into soul in the 1960s (Soul: a Historical Reconstruction of Continuity and Change in Black Popular Music, 33). The style applied vocal and instrumental elements.
Swing has also helped people come together not only to listen, but also to play. It was during the time of the civil rights movement that swing was created and popularized. While the African Americans had their freedom, they were still largely unaccepted and segregated. Even though swing did not fix the segregation part of the world, it did bring blacks and whites together in interesting ways. Swing was first introduced by black musicians.
James Brown was known for many nicknames such as ‘’Soul Brother Number One’’, ‘’the Godfather of soul’’, ‘’the Hardest Working Man in Show Business,” “Mr. Dynamite” and even “the Original Disco Man.” As a child Brown picked cotton, danced for spare change, and would even shine people shoes. At the age of 16, Brown was caught and convicted for stealing, and he landed in reform school for three years. While incarcerated, Brown met Bobby Byrd, leader of gospel group that performed at his prison. While Brown tried semipro boxing and baseball, but a career-ending leg injury inspired Brown to pursue music fulltime.
