The article, “Shopping Trumps Turkey”, by Gregory Karp, argues between whether or not retailers should initiate Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving day. Karp considers that retailers should not commence the sales a day earlier. I agree with the author, due to the fact that the retailers that begin the sales on Thanksgiving day are careless and greedy, along with commanding people to not spend time with their families. Clearly, retailers should not release Black Friday sales a day earlier. To start off, experts say that the saying of retailers opening because the consumers are asking them to is false.
Sam Walton was selling supplies cheaper than other companies that way people who were less fortunate could afford it. However people did not stop to notice he is putting companies around his out of business. Other local business are selling supplies normal priced or high end prices because of the quality. The quality from the retailer stores around Walmart is more reliable and durable. Also Sam Walton is receiving his merchandise from overseas which causes his products to be cheaper.
Times. “Our guests have expressed that they would prefer to kick off their holiday shopping by heading out after their holiday celebrations rather than getting up in the middle of the night.” Showing that it truly is consumerism over civilization in this day and age. Through it all Leonard shows that one take on Black Friday is a serious one. With all the videos and ads for psycho shoppers and the stories of employees not wanting to work on their holiday.
Summary of Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization The author Andrew Leonard states that the Black Friday insanity is not acceptable within the society. It is getting too out of hand and is leading to people being trampled to death over a good deal on something. Leonards information comes from Target employees who feel that it is unnecessary to have “Black Friday” sales on Thanksgiving, they feel like they should be able to spend Thanksgiving at home with their loved ones. The true meaning of Thanksgiving has been lowered, because people are too worried about getting a good deal rather than spending time with family and showing the true meaning.
History Roommates at Lehigh University Richard Hayne and Scott Belair founded urban Outfitters in 1970. The two were just getting back from doing internships and volunteer work after completing their freshman year of college. Coming back for their sophomore year, the two discussed ideas of a store that sells inexpensive clothes and accessories for dorm rooms. The two open Free People Store in Philadelphia investing $5,000, the store sold inexpensive wore clothes, drug paraphernalia, candles, shirts, and jewelry. Successfully staying in business the two changed the name from Free People Store to Urban Outfitters.
There is another part of the Black Friday scandal, and its about the buying of slaves after thanksgiving. It was said that the day after thanksgiving Plantation owners could buy slaves at a discounted price. But even though this may be true it has no correlation
Many of these companies are competing for customers to buy their chargers and phone cases. At&t has seen a 0.25% rise in supply, GameStop- 0.77% rise. GameStop has reported that they have had a 45% raise in its sales and RadioShack has had a 50% rise. Sprint has discounted their charges and
The Target Corporation is an American retail company founded in 1902 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Originally named Goodfellow Dry Goods, the company was later renamed to Dayton's Dry Goods Company in 1903 and finally becoming the Target Corporation in the year 2000. Over the years, the Target Corporation grew and expanded its retail operations and by the 1970s, it had become a well-known and respected discount retailer by becoming the first retailer to offer a private label credit card to its customers. In the 1980s through 1990s, the Target Corporation invested heavily in technology and supply chain management, which allowed it to expand its product offerings and improve the customer shopping experience. In the years to come, the Target Corporation
Records show due to Walmart is all around the place, gross domestic prices have gone up in an amount. Even though Walmart set up bad labor and gives bad opportunities to their employees, customers still thinks it is very convenient due to the low price. Since it is all around the corner, it is easy for people to walk in and walk out in any minute. The shopping carts are also a useful tool for customers to pick up their products, they also have small drive shopping carts for disables so they can even come to the store without any help. Nothing is better than Walmart in my opinion.
The culture that has come from this holiday urges everyone to go out and shop while many people are trying to get away from that. “Buy Nothing Day is our pushback”says Shawn the owner of Mountain Rose Herbs, many people are tired of the overspending and how normalized it has gotten with the Black Friday holiday. Overspending has become so popularc everyone does it without noticing until they are broke. Many companies are also tired of all the waste that comes from overconsumption whether that be all the waste going into the ocean or all the underpaid workers that have to make all these products then sit and sell them on Black Friday. It has gone so far some companies do not want people to shop at their own stores on Black Friday and participate in Buy Nothing Day instead “As the CEO and owner of Mountain Rose Herbs, I encourage you NOT to shop with us on Friday, November 25,2022” said Shawn the owner.
Best Buy is put into a position to purchase their products at any price in order
I find the notion that we should “occupy Black Friday””(Andrew Leonard’s “Black Friday: Consumerism vs. Civilization”). According to Leonard one act that a conscientious consumer could do would be a strike that would result in more layoffs, pay cuts, bankruptcies, and foreclosures. Walmart would take a hit of course, however, so would Walmart employees. NEED CITATION
This seems like a smart marketing trick that is surely used in other retailers. And what really matters here is that the average American or even those who cannot afford buying things from regular superstores can actually enjoy shopping at Wal-Mart and buy just anything they need at preferential prices. This is the result of Asian-based imports where cutting costs helps Wal-Mart sell at the lowest prices possible thus being able to serve all classes of the
"The people who choose to partake in Black Friday will likely connect it with positive feelings," says Rebecca Greenfield in Why We Really Love Black Friday, According to Science. Many people like Black Friday and even consider it a Thanksgiving tradition, but this is not a good thing. Thanksgiving should be a day to stay home with family and think about how thankful you are for what you already have, not go out and buy more items.
