Betrayal is a major theme in The Crucible. Betrayal is what brought Salem to shambles and caused everyone not to trust one another. Having power will place you in a higher ranking. Indicating to Abigail Williams, she accused several townspeople to save herself. Williams is also sought out as the leader of the accused girls. Throughout the play she bosses and manipulates the girls to lie during the trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Reverend Parris shows a great deal of betrayal throughout the play by convincing the court to throw out leading evidence in the trials. So committing adultery was taken very seriously to the people of Salem. Towards the end of the trails Proctor confesses to all his dirty deeds and ends up dieing for no good reason. The devil is a deliberate subject in Salem. The puritans do not take aberration and they will eternally consider the devil an evil sin. Betty Parris and Ruth Putnam where ones affected and had faintly appeared dead the morning after the accused girls were seen dancing the the woods. With the girls fainting and not waking set a mood for the story line and made The Crucible a very serious time. Ms. Putnam specifies that “I’d not call in sick, the devils touch is heavier than sick.” This quote is very influential because it indicates how strong the devil is to the Putrains. With it being a dangerous time and the townspeople are scared for their own lives, people accuse others to save themselves, Example being is when Williams stabs a poppet with a needle. In Act ll Mary Warren arrives at the Proctors household with the poppet, which Elizabeth Proctor takes away from Warren. Later that night Reverend Hale finds the doll which suspects Elizabeth Proctor as committing witch like acts. Even after Mary Warren openly admits to the poppet being hers and that she put the needle into the doll for safe keeping, but that did not change anything. All these foolish accusations, later decides and shapes the characters
