The Crucible by Arthur Miller is about bewitchery in Salem in the 1600s. It is a story about who lives or dies by accusation of witchcraft. Parris, father of a girl who has been “bewitched”, becomes a very important figure in the witch trials. Later on he becomes an antagonist. Parris is egotistical because he states Abigail makes him look bad, he only cares for his name, and he lies to the court. “I have given you a home child, I have put clothes upon your back-now give me an upright answer” (Owens 854).
