The Crucible Essay The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, is based on the fears of the many accused and accusers. Many lies were formed out of fear of death. Some of the many decisions based on fear can be justified and others can’t. While in court, Elizabeth lied to protect her husband’s name.
In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible and in society, people tend to believe outrageous lies when those lies serve to better their own purpose. In Miller’s play The Crucible he displays the traits of lying for personal benefits and self-deception through two characters, Thomas Putnam and Abigail Williams. Thomas Putnam was a fairly wealthy man in Salem; he also had a lot of authority. When Mr. Putnam heard about the treacherous plots among the girls of Salem, he believed them even though they were irrational. However, he believed them because he could personally benefit from the lies.
The Crucible was written in 1952 by Arthur Miller, the play delivers many messages and carries many themes throughout. Nearly every character in the play is put to the test to display an act of courage, weakness, or truth. Some characters lack these traits and never learn to have courage or display honesty. However, most characters are very courageous and demonstrate these acts throughout the whole play. Overall the theme of the The Crucible boils down to being about honesty, weakness, and courage.

The Crucible is the story of a young Puritan woman in 1692 Massachusetts who made false witchcraft accusations in an attempt to save her life and to end a rival’s life. While her actions are horrific and the cause of numerous deaths, the actions of the adults around her that enabled her lies to cost lives are despicable. Through his dishonest characters, specifically Reverend Parris, Judge Danforth, and John Proctor, Miller exposes the evils of lying to save one’s name and the destruction that inevitably ensues.

People lie all the time, for many different reasons, to keep out of trouble, to get someone else in trouble, to save others, to get something, etc., but all eventually leads to the opposite of what they wanted. One way I personally had an experience with lying and it not turning out the way I wanted was when I told my parents I had no idea where the candy was, but my mom eventually found it in my room and I was busted.

The character Abigail becomes a known liar throughout the story by telling other that she sees the devil and makes accusations towards others about performing witchcraft. One significant theme that is prevalent throughout the play is lies and deceit. Miller applies the theme of lies and deceit all throughout the play because practically all the characters are lying either to themselves or other individuals which plays a hefty role in the plot.
People lie for many reasons. Sometimes it’s to themselves, sometimes it’s to others. No matter who they are lying to, it always affects others around you. In the present, lying could occur more frequently that truth is told.
The Crucible has several different themes that Arthur Miller tries to get across. The theme this essay is about is truth versus lie. This is a main theme in the book because it is discussed throughout the whole play. The body paragraphs of my essay will discuss the development of this theme in the play. The reason this theme was chosen is because without it the witch hunts would have never been started.
