BIBLE OVERVIEW

The Bible has 66 books. Thirty-nine books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament and written by 45 authors over many years.

The Old Testament starts with the Creation and covers God choosing Abram (later called Abraham) to lead God’s chosen people – who will become to be known as the Jews, Hebrews, or the Israelites. The OT tells the story of how the nation of Israel becomes a great nation and then falls because they don’t follow God. It tells the story through prophets, kings, songs, and common people such as Ruth, Job and Esther. You will learn about these people as we go through the Bible this year.

The New Testament tells us about the birth of Jesus and his 33 years of ministry on earth. His death and resurrection is covered and then the rest of the NT tells about how the Christian church is formed. It also has the epistles – which are letters written by many of the leaders of these believers in Jesus Christ. Lot moved to the land that looked the best. Then the LORD said to Abram:

“Lift your eyes from where you are and look north and south, and east and west. All the land I will give to you and your offspring forever. Go walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you. So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD. Genesis 13: 14, 15, 17, & 18.

Abram took that walk and continued to expand his land. This is called the Promised Land and the Jews are living their today – even though people try to take this land from them. It is the country of Israel and is still the Jew’s Promised Land.

As Christians we should take this verse to heart and walk through the length and breadth of our Bibles. Increase our knowledge of God and how to live a holy and righteous
