Today’s generation is definitely influenced and categorized as the generation of technology. The success and failures of many members of the generation are mostly attributed to the technology advances we have today. Adolescents of parents aging from forty and above don’t seem to understand everything that technology can and will do to make life easier, or what certain things mean. The gap between the generations is prevalent and some will never see eye to eye. A quilt is a great way to capture the current ethnic and cultural aspects at the time. It is like a picture or a book because it tells a story. Harriet Powers’ “Bible Quilt” is stitched together like a timeline to represent the story of the Bible (658-659). Polly Calistro’s “Around America” quilt illustrates important monumental and historical sites throughout the United States of America (660). The “AIDS Memorial Quilt” is created by numerous people and it is still growing today. This particular quilt captures the time of AIDS and remembers those who died of the disease (661). These three quilts demonstrate the importance of quilt-making as an important way for people to express themselves and to pass something about themselves to their children. Quilt-making a great way to bridge the gap and allow this generation to finally fully understand their ethnic and cultural past. This story tells about the quilt making that the family does and its importance. Baba, the main quilt-maker, basically sees this simple action as a way for a person to grow all-around. It is even said that through her quilts she was “creating beauty, she found a way to speak, a way that moved, beyond words.” A simple thing like a quilt is found to be of importance to the narrator, Watkins. Watkins is able to understand what Baba is trying to say through her quilts, which expresses the struggles of a female African-American. The ethnic and folk culture importance of Baba’s quilt is obvious and Watkins writes, “this quilt has got to stay in the family somewhere. It has got to tell the story.” Gloria Jean Watkins is able to identify the importance of her family’s ethnic and folk culture, through the quilt. This is an example of exactly what this generation is not doing! The cultural gap is prevalent due to extensive use of technology. This generation is so obsessed with their latest Facebook status, tweet, and Instagram post, that culture is getting lost and not being passed
