His cape flutters as the breeze whips past him. Then, he takes off and flies through the air to catch the young girl right before she hits the ground. This man is a hero— or is he? Acts of courage and strength may be magnificent, but the qualities of a biblical hero are of exceedingly more value. This is because the Lord does not look at man’s outward appearance, but at the heart. A biblical hero has many qualities that no single person can perfectly attain. However, each quality can be attributed to someone in the Bible who demonstrated it well. According to the Bible, a hero is someone who is a selfless servant, wise, and obedient to God’s call. In a biblical sense, wisdom is more than just knowledge or intelligence; wisdom is discernment and acumen. In the Bible, King Solomon was known for being the wisest king (1 Kings 10:23). The Lord highly values wisdom, which is clearly seen in Proverbs 3:13 which says, “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding” (New International Version). Solomon, therefore, prayed to God, asking him to grant him wisdom, and the Lord answered his prayer. One of the clearest examples of Solomon’s wisdom is in his judicial dealing with two prostitutes who each claimed one baby to be her own. Consequently, Solomon suggested that he cut the baby in half so that each woman would have half a baby. The woman who was not the mother did not care if the child died, but the real mother would rather let her child live with someone else than be killed. Therefore, when one of the women agreed to kill the baby, Solomon knew the other was the real mother and ruled accordingly. Because God places such a high value on wisdom, a biblical hero should, like Solomon, ask the Lord to give him wisdom and rely on God to guide his discernment when difficult situations
