When asked to describe a hero, Mickey Mantle, famous baseball player for the New York Yankees, Said “Heroes are people who are all good with no bad in them” This quote shows that a hero is someone who always does the right thing and has good intentions. What a hero should look like now is someone who is loyal and brave.
In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus proves that he is a hero when he went to save his men on “Circe’s Island.” and defeated the cyclops in “The Cave of the Cyclops.”
In The Odyssey, in “Circe’s Island” Odysseus shows that he is a hero, loyal to his men and never leaves them behind. On Circe’s Island, Odysseus sends his men to go search for any life on the island. Afterwards, they did not return back to the ship because they were turned into pigs by Circe. When one of the men escaped he told Odysseus and Odysseus went to save them. When he arrived at Circe's hall where she lived, she tried to turn him into a pig but did not succeed, “I will only spare you if you return my men to their rightful form.” Odysseus rescued his men from being pigs, although he stayed at her island for a year as an agreement to save his men, they left her island. This point of view makes sense because in the story “The cave of the Cyclops.” Odysseus was fooling the Cyclops by saying his name was Nobody. But once Odysseus has defeated the Cyclops he gives out his real name and identity saying, “If anyone asks who has blinded you-what tiny man was able to defeat the mighty cyclops- tell them that it was Odysseus, son of Laertes, who did it!” This shows that Odysseus is not a hero because he let his pride overcome him and that causes the cyclops to tell Poseidon and for Poseidon to kill some of Odysseus’s men.
