Bill Gates: A modern day hero
Bill Gates is one of the most successful and well-known figures in the world of technology. Microsoft, one of the largest software companies in history, was co-founded by him. Gates' journey to success is an excellent example of the Hero's Journey story structure, as introduced by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Bill Gates' journey from his early exposure to computing, to co-founding Microsoft, facing challenges and intense competition, and then transitioning to philanthropy, exemplifies the Hero's Journey story structure.
The first stage of the Hero's Journey is the call to adventure. For Gates, this came in the form of his early exposure to computers. As a teenager back in the 1960s, Gates was fascinated by the new world of computing and spent many hours programming. Considering Gates’ situation, this came in the form of his continued leadership in the tech industry and he continued to be an important figure in the technology world. On the other hand, he has also dedicated a remarkable portion of his net worth to philanthropic causes through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he “gave over $28 billion to charities focused on scientific research and international development” (American Academy of Achievement). The Gates Foundation is a philanthropic organization that strives to improve healthcare and reduce poverty worldwide.
