After graduating from Rancocas Valley Regional High School, Harris went on to play football at Pennsylvania State University where he became an All-American fullback. As the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft, Harris was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers over future star running back Lydell Mitchell. Harris started his professional career by being named the NFL rookie of the year in 1972 after rushing for 1,055 yards and 10 touchdowns. Harris became very popular with Pittsburgh’s Italian American population, despite being generally known as African American.
