The contemporary issue of abortion and its status of morality is a major topic found today in the field of biomedical ethics. Abortion is considered a moral issue because the fate of the unborn is at stake ethically, and results in the unnecessary termination of human life. Justifying whether the choice to terminate the unborn is moral is the main controversy with several factors coming into play, such as women’s rights, medical ethics, religion, and politics. The unborn is an ethical entity because of its potential as a human being, without the self-awareness needed to make decisions about its own life. The moral question regarding abortion is, “Does the unborn deserve moral consideration?” When analyzing this question, one must consider several arguments that try and justify a correct answer. The first argument is the Bodily Rights Argument, which states that every woman has rights and bodily autonomy. A major flaw in this argument is that it considers the fetus to be just like any other limb on a woman’s body, such as an arm or a leg. This argument does not allow the unborn to make a rational decision since it’s incapable of doing so. The fetus’ relationship to the mother is parasitic in nature since the unborn being is only temporarily attached to the host for growth and nourishment. This argument also doesn’t consider the father’s opinion on the choice to choose an abortion. Abortion solves this problem by eliminating unwanted births and allows a fetus to develop in a home where their chance of a happy and successful life is greater than in a home where they are neglected and unwanted. A major flaw in this argument is the assumption that the unwanted fetus will grow and mature into a law threatening citizen, instead of a productive, successful member of society. Likelihood does not translate to certainty. Human beings are not valuable just because they have worth. Every human being has the potential to be successful and to live a happy and healthy life. Many instances throughout the history of our country have shown that an unwanted and unloved child turned that negativity around and made positive contributions to society.
