What is “Biometric”?
Biometric refers to the way by which an individual can be identified according to their unique biological traits. Considering the fact that each individual is unique, a person can easily be identified by his or her inborn physical or behavioral traits. Hence, making it easier to identify a person under surveillance or someone who has just committed a crime. There are several ways by which a person can be biometrically indentified, the oldest of them being the ‘fingerprinting verification’. The fingerprint recognition is one of the oldest and most well known means of identification. It involves the comparison of two human fingerprints. It analyzes the ridges and valleys patterns on the fingertip for differences. Advantages:
-The rate of accuracy is very high.
-It is an easy mean of idenfication.
- It is standardized.
- It is one of the most developed biometrics.
Disadvantages:
-Being related to criminal identification, people may find the fingerprint identification invasive.
-Age can interfere with the accuracy of fingerprint. For example: The size of a child’s fingerprint changes quickly.

Face Recognition (or facial recognition): Visual form of biometric. The process of face recognition can be carried without informing and interacting with the individual. While the identification is being done the individual may remain unaware of the process. Face recognition is done by analyzing digital image and comparing patterns of the humans’ face. Advantages:
- Face recognition is not much invasive
-The technology used is not expensive.
Disadvantages:

Some are for and some are against it. Many questions about biometric in relation to human’s personal privacy have been raised. While some find it effective, others consider it to be a threat.
In the past, employees were given a badge with their photo by their company for identification use. But with the advent of new technologies, many organizations have decided to implement the usage of biometric identification in the workplace. However, not everyone is happy about this new initiative; some employees on the other hand are more reluctant to provide personal information raising concern about the security of their personal privacy.
