How did the FBi start and who was the man in charge of it all ? J. Edgar Hoover was the head director of the FBI in 1924 to 1972 on his dying day. Hoover is famous for being power hungry, being able to get jobs done and catching famous criminals during his time such as the Dillinger Gang. He changed how the FBI operated which gave the FBI an edge over the people Hoover viewed as threats. J. Edgar Hoover is the first person credited with putting together a centralized nation fingerprint database in the government and as well as being credited with that he is also credited with having a centralized forensic laboratory. Anyone person is capable of enormous hatred when given the opportunity sadly hoover was given just the one, the head of a government operated agency. Cointelpro otherwise known as counter intelligence program conducted a series of covert, and most often illegal activities aimed at the dissolution and discrediting of radical political organizations (bio). This group was able to gain intelligence on people such as marcus garvey ( leader of a pan African group) Martin Luther King Jr. and many more all because Hoover felt either threatened or he felt hatred towards them for what they were doing. The group known as COINTELPRO conducted many operation such as raids, wiretaps and planting evidence on people of interest for Hoover. … Hoover reported that radicals posed a real threat to the U.S government. He advised drastic action against another possible revolution. (“J. Edgar”). With the best intent in mind he used the wrong means to achieve his goals of a safer America, he misused power trusted to him by the people of US and abused their trust. Which earned Hoover the reputation he has today among current day history books. He is resented and accused of acting without evidence to prove he was
