The unification of the German states was the doing of Otto von Bismarck and after the success of this goal Bismarck wanted to make sure that the country did not endure any challenges that would decrease the power of the country, even though the country faced domestic opposition and suspicion from the rest of Europe rather than seeking for more colonies and fighting wars. Bismarck became chancellor on November 9th, 1873 and his office ended in 1890, hence Bismarck provided continuity and stability for the country while deceiving countries with his predominance. One key factor of Bismarck's foreign policy in which he was successful was the way that he was able to weaken and isolate France. In 1885, he began to obtain overseas colonies as he convinced France to do the same. Bismarck’s plan was to have France send troops over to the colonies that they would try to claim because there would be conflict in those colonies. During this time, Germany worked with France as if they were allies due to the fact that they were both anti-British because Britain at the time was powerful. With the result of conflicts happening in Africa there was a meeting in Berlin in 1885 to settle these disputes. Bismarck’s foreign policy as a result was successfully polished as a short term effect for Germany because during the rule of Bismarck Germany was successfully protected. Once Bismarck resigned from office there was a change done to Germany. The Kaiser was against the Bismarckian system and teared it apart and tried to rule Germany a different way in 1890.
