Black Activism: The Black Lives Matter Movement
This study will ask the question, how has the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement affected your perception of police officers? The major hypothesis that will be tested is that the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement has had no effect on how Black & Latino college students view on police officers. This hypothesis depends on the notion that the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement has not negatively or positively affected these young college students. This hypothesis takes into account the race and ethnicity of each student as well as their age group. This study approaches the hypothesis by isolating the effects of the movement on the students from any social or economic situation that the student may living in.
Black Student Unions are currently present throughout the nation due to efforts of past struggles. San Francisco State College (now University) was the first official campus to coin the name BSU as well as the first University to open up its own College of Ethnic Studies department. This came out of the Black Studies Department formed due to the Student Strike of 1968 to 1969. The College to this day continues to celebrate its forty years of functioning and stands proud on the fact that is is the only academic department of its kind throughout the country. Within a later conference held in California, other campuses took up the name and Black Student Unions became widely accepted.
In 2013, a movement with the name of Black Lives Matter began to promote their slogan against police brutality and other injustices against the black community. The movement is supported by many other blacks and even the network B.E.T.. The main problem with this group is that they are segregating themselves from other races whenever they say "black lives matter". Black Lives Matter began three years ago, after the death of Trayvon Martin who was killed by George Zimmerman. Black Lives Matter campaigns against police brutality.
The Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 by three African American women. It’s another social justice that has made national news for their cause. Black Lives Matter is just more than a social movement. It is an out cry for help, as a nation, as a whole. Black Lives Matter is a community.
Throughout American history, it has been the common citizens who have changed the course of history. A voice speaks out, and its fellows listen, and when they add their own voices, they become a shout impossible to ignore. When good citizens come together for a common cause they become a powerful force that is impossible to ignore as well as an unstoppable force for change. America itself is an example of this trend. America, before it was the free and independent nation that it is today, was a British colony, subject to the laws and levies that King George passed.
There have been many movements in the United States in which African Americans have been the focal point for example the Selma March, the March on Washington, the civil rights movement, and even today the Black Lives Matter movement. Those movements have had a significant impact on the United States and still play a part in today’s society. Those movements still play a part in today’s society because without those movements there wouldn’t be a Black Lives Matter because African Americans wouldn’t have the courage to stand up a fight for their rights if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, or the many other activists that stood up for African-American rights. Selma and the March on Washington share a big relationship to the Black Lives Matter and they are just as important to the civil rights movement.
Statement of Purpose In light of recent events and social media uproar, the goal of this argumentative paper is to provide a brief but comprehensive understanding to the concept of the black lives matter movement and slogan. The movement is an affirmation of Black people’s contributions to society, humanity, and their resilience in the face of oppression. (“About,” n.d.) As a result, this paper will critically examine the foundation of the movement and the validity of both sides of the argument and the media’s involvement and several other topics.
I think If Martin Luther King Jr. were to reappear today he would definitely note that in the almost 50 years since his death, there has been progress with race relations in America, but we still have a long way to go. He wanted the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners to “be able to sit down at the table of brotherhood” (Simon, 2016) and that brotherhood “will be able to work together” and to “stand up for freedom together.” I think he would have helped out with the Black Lives Matter movement, but he would have also made more of an effort to include a greater percentage of other races in the movement and in the conversations that need to happen about injustice, racism, and discrimination in todays society. “About four-in-ten
The Black rights movement affected the black community in a positive way. It opened eyes to create equality for African Americans. The people that chose to stand up for the causes that were important to them had to be strong willed individuals. This holds true for the sports world as well. Equality can only come when prejudice and stereotypical barriers are broken down.
The impact of the Black Panther Party, along with other Black Nationalist groups and leaders, can still be felt today. Research, movies, and documentaries continue to be made on the impact of race on American society, and how it is intertwined with the BPP especially. With movements like the Black Lives Matter movement, and songs like Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’, Americans continue to look into the racial past of the United States and the FBI’s goal to obliterate the Black Panther Party, as the argument of whether or not they were equivalent to terrorist and hate groups like the KKK still goes on today. The Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) seeks to fight against many of the same principles that the Black Panther Party once stood for.
Black Lives do Matter Unless you live under a rock, you have atleast heard of black lives matter and understand what this movement mean as a whole. In case you don 't know or understand, Black Lives Matter is a Civil Rights movement against police brutality, wrongful killing of blacks , and being subjective to racism and white supremacist on a daily basis. Some people believe that this movement is racist ,Anti-American, and not a civil rights movement , they believe this just a bunch of thugs that are anti-police ,anti-American and that we are just “pulling the race card” to get what we want in America and to get head in life. Some people also try to change Black Lives Matter to “All Lives Matter” because they do not fully understand the meaning
The Black Panthers were a Black Power group that wanted equality for everyone. The Black Panther Party for Self Defense helped shape the Civil Rights movement immensely. Who they were, what their core beliefs were, and how they shaped the Civil Rights movement, and America today will be covered. The Black Panthers were originally started by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton.
Racial justice has been an ongoing battle for many years. Racial justice activism also goes by the term anti-racist activism. But what exactly do these both stand for? Anti-racism is the process of trying to eliminate racism by changing systems, polices and organizations, it aims to change the practice and attitudes, so that power is shared equally (“Anti-Racism Defined”). With that term we can see and understand why some groups and individuals are considered a racial justice activist, by identifying and trying to work the problem to end racism.
The title of the article I chose to address is titled “The rise of Black Lives Matter: Trying to break the cycle of violence and silence”. This article extend beyond the idea of Black Lives Matter and wants the reader to be informed on what it is like to be black in america. The author includes a wide amount of information to help the reader understand why this cry for help was even created and why they want to stand up and make a change in our society. The purpose of this piece is to inform the general audience as to what Black Lives Matter really is and explain how they hope to rise as a movement. All though there may be issues within the group and outside forces that are wanting to go against them they will still not be silenced.
In the past recent years, the NBA has used their platform to raise awareness for Black Lives Matter through the use of language, power, and symbols. The NBA started using their platform for this foundation in May of 2020 when George Floyd was killed. After the murder of George Floyd was when the BLM movement was created. The NBA was and still supports the Black Lives Matter movement. Through the use of language, power, and symbols the NBA has broadcasted and supported the Black Lives Matter movement around the world.
