This week’s assignment is to answer questions, in essay format, from chapters 7 and 8 of the assigned textbook, “The Black Church in the African American Experience,” by C. Eric Lincoln and Lawrence H. Mamiya, provided the answers. Below are responses to the five questions: 1. How did the Black Power and Pride Movement affect the African American Conciseness? From reading chapter 7 of the textbook, it can be surmised that they had a significant affect. As a result, black churches and clergy are more involved in community outreach programs. The church and clergy continue to seek ways to support liberation within Black Communities. Lastly to quote the authors there is, “[…] a greater political awareness among Black Church constituencies (Mamiya 195).” 2. How did it affect the African American Religious structure? The movement lobbied for social, economic, and political interests of the Black Church constituency. This too was covered in Chapter 7 of the assigned textbook. 4. What is Black Liberation Theology and how does it influence the Black Consciousness? Also found in chapter 7 was information on the motif of Black Liberation Theology. It was steeped in teaching theology from a black perspective. This radical idea continued to shape Black Consciousness. The movement influenced Black Consciousness in that it legitimized the study of black churches and black religious phenomena in academic institutions, but it gained recognition for the intellectual perspectives and writings of black people in a way not previously experienced in America.
